How Did We Do?

Johnnie Mae Paskins began her journey in Norfolk, Virginia on July 12, 1946. Johnnie was the fourth of five children. At an early age, her parents moved the family to Omaha, Nebraska where she attended Kellom Elementary School and graduated from Technical High School. In her early years, Johnnie was a precocious child. At the age of six, as a majorette, she led the high school band entertaining all in attendance including famed boxer, Joe Louis. When she was eleven, her star shone as bright as her confidence; when she was not performing at the "Offbeat" with her group "The Chennels", she was known to walk up to neighbors and ask them if they wanted to hear her sing.

Besides her captivating smile, one of Johnnie's most notable gifts was her creativity. As a child, she was known to create Halloween decorations so frightening that they once prompted her dad to yell from the yard to her mother before approaching the porch.

Johnnie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at Morning Star Baptist Church, Omaha. She was a faithful servant of the Lord and an impassioned and devoted member of Morning Star Baptist Church. Johnnie began her service for the Lord by singing in the youth choir, and concluded it in the Seasoned Seniors ministry.

Johnnie started her career at the First National Bank of Omaha directly out of high school. Just as in her early years, throughout her career she was an achiever. Her persistence and leadership qualities continuously opened doors of opportunity. Johnnie's work ethic and creativity did not go unnoticed. Before retiring, Johnnie's proven dedication and integrity had earned her multiple promotions where she served in supervisory positions over various departments. In 2010, after 42 years of service, Johnnie retired with distinction, having never missed a day of work.

One of Johnnie's favorite pastimes was traveling with family and friends. She cruised to the Caribbean and Mexico with her group The Crazy Cruisers annually. She had also travelled to Paris, Japan, Germany and many US destinations.

Johnnie, a pillar of the family provided guidance, support, encouragement and unconditional love to her immediate and extended family and friends. She possessed a delightfully engaging personality, exuberating charm, warmth, and genuine companionship.

Johnnie Mae Paskins was called to eternal rest on Saturday, March 21, 2020. She was preceded in passing by her parents Lenwood and Thelma Whitaker and her brother and sister-in-law Oliver and Fayette Whitaker.

Those who rejoice in Johnnie's celebration of life and cherish precious memories are her loving son N'Namdi (Ruma) Paskins; sister Carolyn Gibson-Patrick; brothers Linwood (Janice) Whitaker and Donnell (Augusta) Whitaker; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church members and special friends from over the many years.

I am sad to learn of Johnnie Mae's passing. I have always cherished memories of working with her many years ago, and I remember vividly her nature, her strength, and her guidance. I often think of her and the many lessons I learned from her--about business, and more importantly, about life--that I carry with me today. She was one of the most patient, caring, and wise women I've ever met, and I will continue to think of her and hold her in my heart, always. Blessings and love to you, N'Namdi and her entire family.
