Growing up on cox street ,Jacksonville Illinois , a girl ,black and very smart was unusual ,for me to know about , I lived on one side of the black church and Phillis on the other . 1 block apart . She was a great friend to have in 1954 we were 12 and I never remember anything but kind words to me from Phillis or any one in the Back family household . I called her father mr . Del because my dad called him dell. I walked by their home everyday on my way to Jefferson school . Color of our skin wasn’t match of a issue in the late 40s early 50s . Everyone was dirt poor , we all had out houses , most had no cars ,we all had dreams . Mr del gave me a lecture on his front porch about how to treat people (( I never forgot it. I had other close friends who didn’t look just like me and I still remember them almost as well as phillis. Dusty Mickens , Bobby and Kenny Watts . Ken Norton ,, we played and fought together almost every day . Bobby was killed in Vietnam Nam , ken heavy weight champ of the world , we had a small tight family type neighborhood that led us to a bigger world . I moved to Fort Lauderdale Florida in 1957 , and returned to marry and raise my children in Jacksonville ,building my first home in 1965 next door to that same church on cox street . I was a firefighter . I built 600+ more homes homes in Morgan county and retired 1995 . I live still here in Jacksonville ,and also in Florida part of the year . This was to let you know that others besides the black family thought very highly of my friend phillis Jim

My deepest sympathy to the Adams family. Phyllis was such a helpful, professional, kind, and a fun person to work with. I will never forget how she had an open door and welcoming smile. She will be truly missed by all. We had such a great time seeing her last month at a work gathering.
